On this Throwback Thursday, we look back to January 2019, when the disruption of gas service on Aquidneck Island during a bitter cold snap threatened a variety of plants in our greenhouses – including Heliotrope, Fuchsia, Poinsettia, Bay Tree, Allamanda and Easter Lilies.

Unfortunately, putting our plants up in hotels or with residents who had oil heat was not an option.

So our Director of Gardens and Grounds Jeff Curtis and his staff answered the challenge with portable propane tank top heaters that ran around the clock during really cold weather to maintain an optimum greenhouse temperature of between 65 and 75 degrees.
