We close out Throwback Thursday by recalling a flower show held on on the grounds of Chateau-sur-Mer on this date in 1914, well before the Preservation Society existed.
A contemporary issue of Harper’s Bazaar had this to say:
“Late in June, Miss Edith Wetmore and the Newport Garden Association arranged a typically delightful affair. On grounds adjacent to the Wetmore estate, a flower show was held. Newport gardens are only too lovely. Nearly all of them carry the recent handiwork of their feminine owners, tamed and trained by the expert gardeners who have reigned supreme for so many years.”
Indeed, as our Curator of Historic Landscapes and Horticulture Jim Donahue has noted, the estate gardeners did all the work of growing and tending the plants, and set up all the displays, while society ladies won the ribbons.
