St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held ‘rain, snow, or shine’ Saturday

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Despite the snowfall Friday, several Portsmouth representatives are expected to march in the 61st annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 11. Heading to the parade? Here’s what you need to know. 

About the Parade

“The 61st annual Newport, Rhode Island Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be held, rain, snow, or shine, on Saturday, March 11th 2017,” according to the event website.

The parade will start promptly at 11 a.m. from Newport City Hall and proceed to Carroll Avenue at St. Augustin’s Church in the heart of the Fifth Ward. 

“The parade this year is estimated to last 2 hours and will include Pipe Bands, Marching Bands, Fife & Drum Corps, Clown Units, reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations including police and fire units, social/fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Schools, and non-profits.” 

The Portsmouth Police and Fire Departments are expected to participate in the parade. However, the participate lineup is subject to change. 

The Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is always held on the Saturday preceding March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day), unless the 17th is a Saturday, in which case it is held on that day.

This year’s parade is dedicated to the memory of John Anthony Marshall (April 16, 1943 – September 27, 2015) and John R. “Bobby” Mello (February 22, 1933 – February 8, 2016). 

Parade Weather 

Bundle up for this year’s parade. The weather on Saturday will be blistery and cold with a high temperature of 25 degrees during the day and a northwest wind of 18 to 21 mph.

Temperatures drop Saturday night to a low of 10 degrees. 

Parade Parking and Traffic 

Traffic flow and parking in Newport will be affected by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which kicks off at 11:00 a.m.

Traffic will be congested in the downtown area from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking will be limited.

The parade participants will be begin staging on Lower Broadway at about 9 a.m., so it is recommended that people coming to Newport to view the parade avoid Broadway.

The two best routes into the city with available public parking are:

Westbound on Memorial Blvd, right onto Bellevue Ave. (northbound), left on Church St. and right into the Waterfront Parking lot (situated between Church and Mary St.) Farewell St. South to America’s Cup Ave., and right into the Gateway parking garage.

Parking is prohibited on the following streets from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. All vehicles parked in restricted areas will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

No parking areas along the parade route are:

Broadway from Cranston/Equality Park West to Washington Square
Equality Park Place and Equality Park West
Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Boulevard (West side)
Bull Street at Spring Street
Spring Street at Bull Street
Washington Square from Broadway to Thames Street
Thames Street from America’s Cup Avenue to Morton Avenue
Carroll Avenue from Morton Avenue to Harrison Avenue
Both sides of America’s Cup Avenue at the Gateway Center
Narragansett Avenue between Spring Street and Bellevue Avenue

Traffic Detours

Southbound Broadway diverted onto Marcus Wheatland Blvd southbound at Equality Park.
Spring St northbound diverted away from Broadway and up Bull St. to Kay St
Westbound Memorial Blvd West diverted northbound on Thames St at the Post Office
Northbound Thames St diverted away from America’s Cup up Mill St to Spring St.

Enforcement of City Ordinances

During this year’s parade, the Newport Police Department will be strictly enforcing City Ordinances (open containers of alcohol in public, noise violations, disorderly conduct, and underage drinking) along the parade route and the surrounding areas.

The police department will have a strong presence to make this a fun, safe and family friendly event.
