NEWPORT, R.I. — Back by popular demand, beach polo returns to the Newport Winter Festival this weekend at Easton’s Beach (locally known as First Beach).

This free event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26, at 1 p.m. (weather permitting) at Easton’s Beach, 175 Memorial Boulevard, Newport.

For weather updates, please call (401) 846-0200. Click Here for directions.

The exhibition polo matches, organized by Newport Polo (with headquarters in Portsmouth), will feature teams competing each day in a match composed of 4 chukkers (periods of play) for a duration of 1+ hour, during low tide.

Spectators are encouraged to witness the fast-paced contests in the picturesque setting on the beach, and cheer on the teams, playing on thoroughbred mounts.

Admission and parking at the Easton’s Beach parking lots are free.

Beach Polo is a low-impact, eco-friendly exhibition, and a much anticipated highlight on the closing weekend of the Newport Winter Festival.

The players are from the Newport Polo Club and other regional contenders, playing on polo horses. Horses are accustomed to sand footing in their natural habitats all over the world, including the desert southwest.  The polo ponies are highly fit and exercised in arena polo, played on similar footing materials.

For more unique polo experiences during the Newport Winter Festival, guests are invited to come see Sacred Ground on Saturday, Feb. 25, when a cinematic celebration of the Newport International Polo Series makes its world premiere at the Jane Pickens Theater.

The screening is a 1-night engagement, presented in conjunction with the Newport Winter Festival, to give fans the only opportunity to see the feature-length film on the big screen.

Tickets are $12, and can be purchased in advance from www.janepickens.com (and at the door, if available); proceeds will benefit Friends of the Jane Pickens Theater.

The event will feature a 7 p.m. cocktail party and 8 p.m. film screening.

Newport Polo is the home of America’s first polo club, est. in 1876, and founding member of the United States Polo Association, offering public exhibition matches, polo club member services for grass and arena polo, and polo instruction year-round.

Newport Polo hosts the Newport International Polo Series XXVI.
