PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — A body discovered early Wednesday morning on Teddy’s Beach has been identified as a Portsmouth man, according to The Department of Environmental Management (DEM).

The body has been identified as Ronald Atkins, 77, of Portsmouth, according to DEM spokesperson Gail Mastrati.

DEM was contacted by Portsmouth police at 7:13 a.m. Wednesday following a phone call to police. The caller reported seeing a body in the water at Teddy’s Beach.

“Foul play is not suspected,” wrote Mastrati in an email. “Mr. Atkins is believed to have been a kayaker.”

A kayak was found a short distance away. Responders also discovered a wetsuit on the body.

The body was given to the custody of the state medical examiner.

Portsmouth police referred all questions to DEM on Wednesday.
