Common Fence Music kicks off season with Latin artists

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Continuing to celebrate their 25th year of presenting folk and world music concerts to Aquidneck Island and East Bay communities, Common Fence Music will kick off its winter and spring 2018 season with shows featuring Latin artists.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. Common Fence Music will present its first-ever Valentine’s Latin Dance Night with Robertico Arias Y Su Alebreke at the Common Fence Point Community Hall,  933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth.

Leading the live seven-piece ensemble is Dominican Latin percussionist, vocalist and bandleader Luis “Robertico” Arias, who has been performing professionally since his teens.

He has toured internationally with such bands as Los Hijos del Rey, El Equipo de Dioni Pernandez, Boni Cepeda, The New York Band and La Gran Manzana, and recorded with such artists as David Byrne.

Robertico is also a tireless educator, working with a wide range of students from elementary school-aged students in community music programs up to university students and adults, including students in Common Fence Music’s Connecting the Beats program.

He and his band Alebreke have become Rhode Island institutions with their energy-filled performances of salsa, bachata, cha cha and merengue. Audience members are invited to join us for a pre-show salsa lesson with FloorTime studios dance instructor Sara Barker from 7:15-7:45 p.m.

The lesson is free with admission. Visit https://www.facebook.com/Robertico-Y-su-Alebreke-320889444716298/?ref=nf for more information about Robertico Arias y su Alebreke.

Tickets to this performance are $20 in advance, $22 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m.

This is a BYOB and food event; other refreshments will be available for purchase. The Common Fence Point Hall is fully accessible. For tickets and information, please visit www.CommonFenceMusic.org.

Following this exciting Latin weekend, the Common Fence Music Winter/Spring 2018 season continues with an eclectic array of talented artists from Rhode Island to Mali.
