DUI charges top Portsmouth police reports this week

A Portsmouth woman was arrested on April 9 after running away with a 2-year-old child from the scene of an accident in the area of Route 24 and Boyd's Lane.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Driving under the influence (DUI) charges topped Portsmouth police reports this week. Featured below are reports from this past week’s arrests. 

Portsmouth man charged with DUI

Richard Daniel North, 52, of Martens Road, Portsmouth, was arrested on March 26 at 7:59 p.m. and charged with DUI, first offense, and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

On March 26 at 7:20 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a Martens Road residence for an alleged drunk driver. While speaking with the resident, the officer heard a vehicle pull into the driveway. A man, identified as North, then entered the residence.

The suspect stated he had just left the Beachcomber bar. He went back to the Beachcomber bar to check if a cell phone was left behind.  

The officer observed a strong odor of alcohol. The driver’s eyes appeared watery and glassy, according to police. The man told the officer he consumed 5 or 6 beers.

After failing a field sobriety test, North was transported to the police station where he refused a chemical test.

Connecticut woman charged with DUI after car lands in ditch

Paige Ann Treglia, 20, of 11 Island Drive, Norwalk, Conn., was arrested on March 26 at 4:06 p.m. and charged with DUI, first offense, .15 or greater.

On March 26 at 3:48 p.m., police responded to the area of 775 Union St. for a report of a motor vehicle accident. The caller told police a vehicle had crashed into a ditch off the side of the road in front of her residence.

Upon arrival, police observed a vehicle with its front end in the ditch and rear tires off the ground. The driver was uninjured.

Police detected an odor of alcohol. The driver’s eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy, according to police. The driver, identified as Treglia, told police she was coming from a friend’s birthday party and had consumed 2 mimosas.

After failing a field sobriety test, Treglia was transported to the police station. A chemical test measured a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .216 on Phase I and .204 on Phase II. The legal BAC limit in Rhode Island is 0.08.

Tiverton man charged with DUI 

John Ryan Spencer, 30, of 55 Cory’s Lane, Tiverton, was arrested on March 26 at 12:50 a.m. and charged with DUI, first offense, .15 or greater.

On March 26, at 12:30 a.m., police observed a vehicle traveling 57 mph in a 35-mph zone. The vehicle was stopped in the area of 3001 East Main Road.

The driver told police he had a few drinks earlier. The driver’s eyes appeared bloodshot and watery.

After failing a field sobriety test, the driver, identified as Spencer, was transported to the police station. A chemical test measured a BAC of .149 on Phase I and .162 on Phase II.
