ELECTION 2018: Everything You Need to Know

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Want to know where to vote? Don’t know if you’re registered? Find out everything you need to know here.

The General Election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

If you have any questions about whether you are registered or where you are registered to vote in Portsmouth, please call the Portsmouth Board of Canvassers at 401-683-3157 for more information.

These locations are open for all Statewide General and Primary Elections. Precincts may be combined for the Presidential Preference Primary and Special Elections.

PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with RIGL§17-19-24.2, poll workers will ask you to show Photo ID when you vote at your polling site. In accordance with RIGL §17-10-3 (c), “You must be registered to vote from your actual place of residence.”

What to bring to polls

Rhode Island state law 17-19-24.2 requires all voters to present valid photo identification prior to voting at the polls in all elections beginning in 2014. Voters will need to present one of the following forms of photo ID:

Photo ID

  • RI Driver’s License or Permit
  • RI Voter ID Card *
  • U.S. Passport
  • ID issued by a U.S. educational institution
  • U.S. military ID
  • ID card issued by the United States or the State of Rhode Island
  • Government issued medical card
  • Tribal ID

*The Rhode Island Secretary of State’s office is issuing free voter photo ID cards to individuals who do not possess any of the valid Photo IDs listed above. See the Secretary of State’s website for additional information on the program, or call (401) 222-2340.

Any voter who is unable to present valid identification at the polls, will be required to cast a provisional ballot.

Identification is not required to vote by mail ballot.

 

Mail Ballots

Miss the deadline for the mail ballot application? You can still submit an emergency mail ballot at your local board of canvasser until Monday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. 

The Portsmouth Board of Canvassers, located at Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road, is open Monday to Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All completed mail ballots, including emergency ballots, must be received by the State Board of Elections by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
