Explore Narragansett Bay by railway starting next weekend in Portsmouth

Rail Explorers, an eco-tour company featuring pedal-powered rail bikes, will offer specially priced tours in May for Newport County residents.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — A brand new outdoor activity for exploring Narragansett Bay by railway is coming to Portsmouth this April. Find out when here. 

Rail Explorers will begin its Rhode Island division next weekend on Saturday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All rides will start in Melville at 1 Alexander Road.

The Rail Explorers: Rhode Island Division, presented by the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad, will feature a historic exploration of the railroad between Newport and Common Fence Point.

Participants will rent either a 2-person Tandem Explorer or a 4-person Quad Explorer and pedal along the railroad tracks located along the west side of Portsmouth and Aquidneck Island. 

“Take a tour with Rail Explorers and experience the magic of the railroad like never before,” according to the Rail Explorers’ website. “Ride the rails on our pedal powered ‘rail explorers’ – a unique activity suitable for everyone.

“The rail explorers are easy to pedal, the terrain is mostly flat and the ride is relaxing and enjoyable. Everyone can enjoy this activity: couples young and old, groups of friends, and families of all ages and abilities. The pedal powered explorers provide a smooth and comfortable adventure suitable for all.”

The Rhode Island division will be open until November with 2 routes available during the summer months: the “Northern Ramble” and “Southern Ramble.” The Northern Ramble will be available until November. 

The Northern Ramble 

According to the Rail Explorers’ website:

“Enjoy a leisurely 6 mile expedition along spectacular Narragansett Bay with views only visible from the unique perspective of the railroad.

“The Northern Ramble traverses private waterfront estates, 2 golf courses, the Newport Preservation Society Topiary Gardens (Green Animals) and the Audubon Society Nature Preserve.

“Four tours per day between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. offered April through November. One way tour and shuttle bus. Approximately 90mins. Please allow up to 2 hours for this tour.

The Southern Ramble

According to the Rail Explorers’ website:

“The Southern Circuit is a special 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. tour only offered during July and August.

“The Souther Circuit is a 6 mile round trip starting at Portsmouth Grove Station and heading south to the Mile 4 Turnaround stop. Enjoy incredible water views over Narragansett Bay. Bring a drink or a snack to enjoy during a 20 minute break at our bay front picnic area before riding back to the station.

“Approximately 90mins. Please allow up to 2 hours for this tour.”

Tickets range from $75 for a 2-person Tandem Explorer to $125 for a 4-person Quad Explorer.
