Portsmouth Publick House to compete in 36th annual Great Chowder Cook-off

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Portsmouth Publick House will compete for the first time in Newport Waterfront Events’ 36th annual Great Chowder Cook-off, taking place on Saturday, June 10. 

The event takes place from noon to 6 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.

The competition will feature Portsmouth, Rhode Island’s own Portsmouth Publick House and Chef Bob Edwards competing in the “Seafood” category with their Lobster Seafood Chowder. Portsmouth Publick House is the only Portsmouth business competing at the event this year. 

The Portsmouth Publick House and Chef Bob will enter its chowder creation for the first time at the competition.

“The ‘Seafood’ category will be extremely competitive as last year’s first place winner, Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School – Culinary Arts Program in Taunton, will be stirring things up again,” said Mike Martin, festival director for Newport Waterfront Events, a division of Waterfront Productions.

“But with a little beginner’s luck, a quality recipe and an enthusiastic staff, the Portsmouth Publick House could bring the title home to Portsmouth and enjoy those all important bragging rights.”   

The cook-off features chowders from renowned chefs, who serve samples to festival attendees, who will also act as judges. Chefs compete for the coveted titles of “Best Clam,” “Best Seafood” and, new this year, “Best Red” chowder with prize money awarded to the winners.

Admission to the Great Chowder Cook-Off also includes a variety of entertainment, including Oyster Shucking & Slurping Contests, Beer Shucking, live music from The Ravers, Cee Cee and the Riders and The Brian Scott Band, the Stop & Shop Culinary Stage with cooking demos and educational workshops, sponsor sampling and a number of other activities. 

Aside from the all-you-can-eat chowder, there will be a host of other food options for sale from Saugy Inc., Ben & Jerry’s, Kettle Korn Express, Del’s Lemonade and Red’s Food Truck, as well as full bars serving beer, wine and summer-themed cocktails.

Although the exclusive Chowderhead Club tickets are now sold out, advance tickets to the Great Chowder Cook-Off are on sale for $20 through June 9 with day of tickets $25. Children are admitted free if age 12 and under and accompanied by a paid adult.
