PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — A search for a “suspicious van” starting Tuesday was a “misunderstanding” involving lost workers, according to Portsmouth police.

The Portsmouth Police Department were notified Tuesday morning about a white van with 2 men driving in the area of Windward Drive and Linda Avenue. The men stopped  to speak with a juvenile walking to a bus stop.

The vehicle and occupants were later identified as workers who were lost.

“The occupants of the van are working in the area and were lost yesterday trying to find a street location,” announced Portsmouth police in a Facebook post. “Yesterday was their first day at their job site location in Portsmouth.”

Portsmouth police thanked the public for assisting in this investigation, which turned out to be a misunderstanding.

“We appreciate the public’s vigilance and are happy that this incident appears to be a misunderstanding,” wrote the Portsmouth Police Department. “The student did the right thing in reporting what had occurred.”

Portsmouth residents are always welcome to report suspicious activity to the Portsmouth Police Department at 401-683-0300.
