PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Newport County branch of the NAACP will hold its Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, “A Day On, Not Off,” on Monday, Jan. 15, starting in Portsmouth.
The day’s events will begin with a torch run, starting at 9 a.m. from the 1st Rhode Island Regiment Monument, Routes 24 and 114, Portsmouth.
The monument is accessible by driving north on Route 114 (West Main Road) towards Bristol Ferry Road. The monument cannot be reached driving south on West Main Road (other side of highway).
The torch run will end at the Thompson Middle School, located at 55 Broadway, Newport, with a presentation and guest speakers.
A luncheon will be held at noon at the Mainstay Inn, 151 Admiral Kalbfus Rd., Newport. Tickets are required for the luncheon. For more information or tickets, call Thelma Williams, 338-1075, or Victoria Johnson, 846-3967.
Additional events will be held later in the day, including an afternoon program at 3 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 20 Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, and an evening service.
