PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Gray Matter Marketing and the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Foundation will host the first-ever, sold-out Mt. Hope Bridge 5K this coming weekend. Check below for traffic advisories and updates.
The inaugural race, which takes place rain or shine, will kick off Saturday, Aug. 12, at 7:30 a.m. from the Portsmouth side.
The race is completely sold out (No on-site registration).
Drivers are advised of traffic delays Saturday morning due to the race.
According to Portsmouth police, “The event will begin at approximately 7:25 am and north bound traffic over the Mt. Hope Bridge from Portsmouth into Bristol will be shut down for approximately 20 minutes until the race exits the bridge.”
Parking will be provided at the finish line of the event adjacent to Roger Williams University on Old Ferry Road in Bristol starting at 5 a.m.
There is no parking available at the starting line in Portsmouth. There are no shuttles from Bristol to Portsmouth after the event.
One lane of traffic will remain open on the Mt. Hope Bridge throughout the event, controlled by the Bristol and State police.
“According to race organizers, “Shuttles will begin transporting athletes from Old Ferry Rd. in Bristol to the starting line in Portsmouth at 6AM. It is critical to event operations that all athletes abide by their assigned shuttle time.
“Times are based on your registration order. Those participants that signed up before July 8th have the later shuttle times. The last wave of shuttles will depart at 6:30 AM!
“There will be NO shuttles after the last wave departs. If you miss your shuttle, you will not be able to race.”
“Bib pick-up will open at 5:30 AM in the parking lot off of Old Ferry Road in Bristol, RI (link below to location),” according to race organizers.
“Runners/Walkers are required to present photo ID when picking up their bibs. If picking up for friends/family, please bring a copy of their ID with you as well (images on a smart phone are acceptable copies!)”
“The forecast currently calls for early morning showers with a chance of scattered thunderstorms later in the day. The event will be held rain or shine,” according to race organizers.
“There is always the potential for extreme or severe weather conditions. Race organizers will do as much as we can to ensure the experience is as safe as possible.
“In the event of severe weather, the race may be delayed as race officials consult public safety officers. If there is more than a short delay, if conditions persist, or the forecast calls for extreme weather, race officials reserve the right to alter or cancel the race. Entry fees are non-refundable.
“Please check our Mt. Hope Bridge 5k Facebook page, and your email, before the race for any changes or cancellations. All entry fees are non-refundable, and there will be no rain date.”
Participants will be shuttled from designated parking at Roger Williams University in Bristol to the race start located off Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth.
The Mt. Hope Bridge 5K is a timed 3.1 mile run from Portsmouth to Bristol. The race starts on Mussel Bed Shoal Road, then crosses the one-mile expanse of the Mt. Hope Bridge into Bristol.
At mile 1.5, the course turns onto the Roger Williams University campus at Columban Drive before ultimately finishing at the base of Old Ferry Road down by the water with a look back at the bridge.
