PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Gray Matter Marketing and the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Foundation will host the first-ever Mt. Hope Bridge 5K this August.
The inaugural race will take place on Saturday, Aug. 12, starting at 7:30 a.m.
The race will give runners and walkers the unique opportunity of crossing Mt. Hope Bay by foot on the historic Mt. Hope Bridge.
Participants will be shuttled from designated parking at Roger Williams University in Bristol to the race start located off Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth.
The Mt. Hope Bridge 5K is a timed 3.1 mile run from Portsmouth to Bristol. The race starts on Mussel Bed Shoal Road, then crosses the one-mile expanse of the Mt. Hope Bridge into Bristol.
At mile 1.5, the course turns onto the Roger Williams University campus at Columban Drive before ultimately finishing at the base of Old Ferry Road down by the water with a look back at the bridge.
Parking will be provided at the finish line of the event adjacent to Roger Williams University on Old Ferry Road starting at 5 a.m. Shuttles will be provided to all participants and will run from 5:40 a.m. until 7:10 a.m.
There is no parking available at the starting line in Portsmouth.
If runners would like to handle their own transportation to and from the start and finish lines, they can be dropped off at the start in Portsmouth. There are no shuttles from Bristol to Portsmouth after the event.
One lane of traffic will remain open on the Mt. Hope Bridge throughout the event, controlled by the Bristol and State police.
Timing for participants
All participants will be in the right hand lane from Portsmouth to Bristol and will be off the bridge by 8:15 a.m. Strollers or pets are not allowed on the bridge.
Registered runners and walkers are welcome to enjoy the Mt. Hope Bridge 5K. However, all participants must be off the bridge (1 mile) in 20 minutes. This requires a 3 mph pace. All participants unable to maintain this pace will be escorted off the bridge by race officials.
In the event of severe weather, the race may be delayed as race officials consult public safety officers.
Approximately 100 percent of net proceed will benefit the Bristol Rotary and their partner charities, according to Gray Matter Marketing.
