PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Richard Robert Oswald, age 84, of Portsmouth died Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI.
He was born December 5, 1932, in Palmerton, PA, the son of the late Clarence J. and the late Clara Pauline (Stout) Oswald. He was the husband of Barbara (Joy) Oswald for 53 years.
Richard obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with honors from Penn State University and worked over the years for RCA and Alcatel Transcom. Music was also an integral part of his life. He was an organist and choir director for most of his adult life, including at the United Baptist Church and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church both of Newport RI.
He also was a long-time member of the Portsmouth Senior and Swanhurst Choruses. In his spare time, he volunteered for the RI Blood Center and Meals on Wheels and enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.
Besides his wife Barbara, Richard is survived by his two sons, Robert Oswald and his wife Suzanne of Wellington, FL, and Allan Oswald and his wife Elizabeth of Tolland, CT, and by his daughter, Joy Oswald and her life partner Steve Chapman of Middletown, RI, his sister Katherine Theilacker and her husband William of Slatington, PA, and seven grandchildren, Kayla Oswald, Sydney Oswald, Ryan Oswald, Caroline Platt, Ellie Platt, Michael Oswald, and Jessica Oswald.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport, RI, and will be announced at a later date.
