PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Portsmouth police charged a local man with driving under the influence (DUI) Monday after a head-on motor vehicle crash on East Main Road.
On March 5, at approximately 4 p.m., the Portsmouth Police Department responded to East Main Road in the area of Ethel Drive for a motor vehicle accident, involving two vehicles.
A green Cadillac, operated by 38-year-old Michael Joseph Lima of 47 Ethel Drive, was traveling southbound on East Main Road when it veered into the northbound lane and struck a white Chevrolet head-on, according to police.
The Chevrolet was operated by a 53-year-old local woman, who was not identified by police.
Lima, who was medically treated by the Portsmouth Fire Department, had suffered an apparent overdose, according to police. Narcan was administered to him twice on the scene.
Lima was eventually taken to Rhode Island Hospital and charged with DUI, first offense; refusal to submit to a chemical test; and other traffic violations.
The 53-year-old local woman was uninjured in the collision.
Both vehicles involved in the accident sustained significant damage. The accident shut down a portion of East Main Road for more than an hour while the Portsmouth Police Accident Recon Team and Portsmouth Detectives investigated.
