Sweet pumpkin, savory meat pies win Portsmouth Pie Off

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — While it was a tough, close call with many award-worthy pies, both a sweet pecan pumpkin pie and a savory meat stout pie were chosen the winners of the 1st annual Portsmouth Pie Off.

The competitive event was held Sunday evening at Ragged Island Brewing Co., 200 Highpoint Ave., Portsmouth, R.I.

The first-ever Portsmouth Pie Off invited amateur and professional bakers to submit their best pies before a panel of three judges for a chance to win a prize and receive a Ragged Island beer.

Approximately eight bakers entered the competition with a few bakers submitting more than one pie.

A total of 12 pies were submitted and ranged in type from a Kentucky pie (pecan with chocolate chip crust) to a sweet potato with bacon and pork belly. The entries also included a pumpkin, strawberry rhubarb, a dark and stormy meringue, and several apple pies.

After tasting the 12 pies in an anonymous judging, the three judges decided to award 2 bakers in separate categories: sweet and savory.

The winners were Liz Cotta of Portsmouth, who baked a pecan pumpkin pie, and Maria Alemany of Middletown, who baked a meat stout pie.

Donating the prizes for the Portsmouth Pie Off were Ragged Island Brewing Co. and Clements’ Marketplace. Serving as judges were Portsmouth Town Councilor Daniela Abbott; Matthew Gray, owner of Gray Matter Marketing and partner of Ragged Island Brewing Co.; and volunteer judge Isaac Xavier-Santos.

More than 40 visitors at Ragged Island were able to enjoy the pies during and after judging.
