Portsmouth restaurants participate in 2nd annual Rhode Island Quahog Week

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) recently announced the following closures of shellfishing areas.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Throughout Quahog Week, more than 30 restaurants across the state, including Portsmouth restaurants, will offer special menu selections that feature the native Rhode Island clam.

As part of continued efforts to support growth of the local food economy and in honor of Rhode Island’s fishing heritage, Governor Gina M. Raimondo declared March 20 to 25 as Quahog Week in Rhode Island.

“Whenever I dine out, I look for fresh, local seafood. And I know I’m not alone,” said Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Director Janet Coit. “We take pride in our seafood in the Ocean State and the hard-working fishermen behind it. And nothing is more Rhode Island than the quahog.

“I hope everyone takes a moment this week to indulge in their favorite quahog dish or sample one of the many tasty offerings of our partner restaurants and markets – from a traditional clam zuppa to a savory quahog hash. We are fortunate to have amazing seafood and award-winning eateries in Rhode Island. Let’s get out there and enjoy them!”
