PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Portsmouth students will hold a fundraising Lap of Love for a local teacher, who was recently diagnosed with a rare genetic condition.
Portsmouth Middle School students will hold a Lap of Love for Laura in support of teacher Laura Boyle on Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. at the middle school, 125 Jepson Lane. The event will be held rain or shine.
All students, families, and friends are welcome. Students will collect donations for Laura at the event.
Laura Boyle, a 27-year-old Portsmouth Middle School teacher, recently went on medical leave after being diagnosed with Von Hippel Lindau Disease, an extremely rare genetic condition.
This genetic condition causes blood vessel tumors to form in up to 10 areas of the body. She is currently being treated for three brain tumors and needs to have doctors remove part of the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine, as well as the gallbladder and liver duct.
Due to her medical condition, she is struggling to maintain her job, medical bills, doctor’s appointments, and student loans. Donations will help support Laura in her struggle.
A GoFundMe page is also set up to help Laura. As of Wednesday, GoFundMe donations total $24,654 of a $100,000 goal.
