PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — When the Portsmouth Youth Football and Cheer league learned a fellow youth sports league’s new equipment was destroyed by fire, they quickly jumped into action.
In just a few days, the Portsmouth youth sports league managed to gather 75 helmets, shoulder pads, practice pinnies, footballs and cheerleading uniforms. Volunteers then filled 2 vans and donated the equipment to the Providence league, according to a Facebook post Tuesday.
The equipment was donated to the Providence 49ers AYF Youth Football & Cheer league, whose new equipment (valued at $15,000) was destroyed in a fire just two weeks before the start of the season, according to WPRI.com.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
The donation from the Portsmouth Youth Football and Cheer resulted in several phone calls and messages, according to the league, including the following from the Providence 49ers AYF Youth Football & Cheer league.
