PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Registration opened Tuesday for two athletic events taking place in Portsmouth later this year.

Mt. Hope Bridge 5K

Registration opened Tuesday for the Mt. Hope Bridge 5K.

Gray Matter Marketing and the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Foundation will bring back the Mt. Hope Bridge 5K on Saturday, Aug. 11. The race will start at 7:30 a.m.

The race will give runners and walkers the unique opportunity of crossing Mt. Hope Bay by foot on the historic Mt. Hope Bridge. Participants will be shuttled from designated parking at Roger Williams University in Bristol to the race start in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, on Saturday morning.

Approximately 100 percent of net proceeds benefit the Bristol Rotary and their partner charities. Registration starts at $30 for an individual with additional fees.

4 Bridges Ride

Registration also opened on Tuesday for the 4 Bridges Ride.

Sponsored by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, this annual 26-mile charity ride allows cyclists an opportunity to cross the Verrazzano, Pell, Sakonnet, and Mt. Hope Bridges.

The event will be held on Sept. 16, starting in North Kingstown and finishing on the campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Save The Bay.

All participants are required to register prior to the event, wear a helmet and obey all traffic laws throughout the course. While strict safety measures are in place throughout the course, no roads will be closed to traffic during this ride.

A 26-mile ride of this nature requires tremendous planning and the cooperation of all seven communities, their police departments, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, R.I. State Police and from all participants and volunteers.

Please visit www.4bridgesride.com to read all of the information regarding this event, including bike drop off, registration, safety information and other important details.

Registration starts at $65 plus processing fees. To register, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/4-bridges-ride-2018-tickets-45490911541
