RWU grads turn passion for adventure into apparel business

RWU grads are turning their passion for the outdoors into an adventure-based brand and clothing line, Only New England (ONE).

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Roger Williams University (RWU) grad Madison Mccormack is turning his passion for the outdoors into an adventure-based brand and clothing line labeled Only New England (ONE).

Madison has joined forces with two of his RWU business major, adventure enthusiasts Charlie Schaefer of Wilton, Conn., and Paul Bowlin, of Westport, Conn., who lived in Portsmouth during his senior year. RWU dorms are located in Portsmouth.

“In March of 2016, while other college students were heading to Punta Cana and Cancun for spring break, Madison, Charlie, and the rest of our buddies from RWU decided to find our own adventure in New England and headed to Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch, NH. Small business and a passion for the outdoors came up as a topic of conversation while we were on the trip,” Bowlin said.

“The Cannon Mountain Observatory Tower in New Hampshire is a featured design, and it symbolizes the birthplace of ONE. From there we started to brainstorm designs based on places we had visited, places off the beaten path in New England.”

The ONE team says their goal is to establish a relationship with the consumer, as well as a bond to real life experiences – a story behind each print.

“Each of us has our own adventures, whether the experience is cliff jumping in Newport, RI — an inspiration for one of our designs – or kayaking and sailing off the coast of Fairfield County. ONE pulls at the emotional side of that experience,” Bowlin said.

The Business School grads have been extremely innovative and hard working at launching the brand. Mccormack applied and received a patent, created the company website , and also found a producer to print high quality designs on a variety of T-shirts and sweatshirts.

“We have a low-cost business model and work with a clothing supplier that does direct to garment printing.  We can order and drop ship without having a large inventory on hand,” Bowlin said.

ONE sells exclusively through their website, but Bowlin said the team has a long term goal of opening retail shops in New England resort towns like Cape Cod.

In the midst of the summer heat, ONE just released their summer line of designs on T-shirts, with more women’s apparel is in the pipeline.  Pricing on Ts and Sweatshirts range from $22.99 to $37.99 with discounts for first time buyers.

The ONE team is extremely excited about the brand’s success to date, and feels that opportunities come like this only once in a lifetime.

“As newly minted graduates, not many people can say that they are passionate about their first job right out of school,” Bowlin explained. “This just motivates us all to work so much harder since the company’s success is squarely on each of our shoulders.”

ONE does most of its marketing through social media. To learn more: visit or Only New England on Facebook and Instagram, onlynewengland.
