Transfer Station to only accept shredded paper in waste bins

The town of Portsmouth, in collaboration with the Portsmouth Business Association and Clements' Marketplace, will hold a community shred-it event. 

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Effective immediately, the Transfer Station in Portsmouth will only accept shredded paper in waste bins and no longer consider it recycling. 

According to a town press release, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC)  in Johnston is no longer accepting shredded paper in mixed recycling.  

Portsmouth residents may dispose of shredded paper in the waste bin at the Transfer Station, according to the press release. 

“Please continue to bag all shredded paper, but it need not be contained in clear plastic bags nor does it need to be double bagged.

“Bags must be tied closed. Composting shreds is a quick and easy way to dispose of your shredded paper as well.
