The Portsmouth Fire Department wants everyone to enjoy the upcoming 4th of July holiday safely. Some types of fireworks are legal in Rhode Island. These fireworks are the kind that stay on the ground and sparkle or crackle. Any fireworks that act as a projectile (they shoot up into the air) are not legal in Rhode Island. Also, any fireworks that explode are not legal in Rhode Island. Sparklers are legal but can also pose a danger to young people. Hand held sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals. Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing, and many children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet.
Some rules to follow regarding fireworks for this season:
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks
• Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
• Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear
• Never light them indoors
• Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
• Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting
• Never ignite devices in a container
• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
• Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire

Our best suggestion is grab a blanket and a patch of lawn, kick back and let the experts handle the show. Have a Happy Fourth of July!!

The Portsmouth Fire Department would like to thank Ray's Towing for assisting at a recent call. A very young child was locked in a car, due to simultaneous calls, the fire department had a delayed response. Ray's Towing heard about the call and arrived minutes before our personnel and unlocked the vehicle. We appreciate the assist!!!
