Rhode Island’s Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Environmental Management (DEM) are lifting blue-green algae health advisories.
DEM is stocking ponds with some 10,000 trout in advance of Columbus Day weekend. However, some local ponds should be avoided due to algae blooms.
Residents are urged to avoid contact with Lawton Valley Reservoir in Portsmouth due to blue-green algae (or cyanobacteria) bloom in the pond.
People are advised to avoid contact with St. Mary’s Pond in Portsmouth because of blue-green algae (or cyanobacteria) blooms in that pond. Blue-green algae can produce toxins that can harm humans and animals.
