The US-China science and technology agreement has only a few weeks till it expires on August 27. The White House will decide whether it will renew the landmark or not.

The SCMP stated in their article that there are only a few weeks left to decide whether they will renew the science and technology agreement that was signed four decades ago by then US President Jimmy Carter and Chinese Paramount leader Deng Xiaoping.

The science and technology agreement came into effect in 1979. It is renewed every five years and will expire on the 27th of August, unless both administrations take action to renew it. The science and technology agreement has laid out the terms for both governments’ cooperation in science.

For over 4 decades, the science and technology agreement between the US and China has yielded the cooperation of both governments in the science and technical fields. A sign that the rivals could set aside their dispute and work together.

Reuters stated in their article that with the bilateral relations not in the best state, a debate is in talks within the US government whether the US will renew the science and technology agreement with China or not.

While the dominant US appears to be in favor of the renewal of the science and technology agreement, there are a few officials and lawmakers that cooperating on science and technology does not make sense as there is an ongoing dispute between the US and China. Representative Mike Gallagher said that renewing the science and technology agreement between the US and China would further put the research and intellectual property of the US into jeopardy.

Meanwhile, China’s embassy in the US has said that Chinese officials have approached the US regarding the science and technology agreement. Embassy spokesperson, Liu Pengyu, said that the US is still conducting a review regarding the science and technology agreement. He also added that both China and the US should consider making adjustments to the original deal.
