According to usatoday.com, the ongoing 2023 Atlantic hurricane season continues to maintain its active status, with Hurricane Nigel, the fifth hurricane of the season, situated far out in the open Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,500 miles away from the East Coast. There are concerns that this hurricane could escalate to near major hurricane status by Tuesday, though the forecasted path suggests it will veer away from the U.S. coastline, minimizing direct threats to the nation.
Nevertheless, the presence of Hurricane Nigel indicates the heightened activity of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. As of Monday evening, Hurricane Nigel was positioned 810 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and was moving northwestward at a speed of 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
The hurricane is projected to intensify over the next few days, potentially reaching winds of 110 mph by Wednesday morning, just 1 mph short of the major hurricane category. However, it is expected to gradually weaken starting late Wednesday and then follow a northward and northeastward trajectory, ultimately heading out to sea for the remainder of the week.
