Family of a New York Man Will Receive $35 Million in Damages

The family of a New York man identified as Kenny Lazo, who was beaten during a traffic stop in 2008, will receive a total amount of $35 million in damages as ordered by the federal jury on Thursday. Lazo was alleged of selling drugs and committed various traffic violations.

In a published article in FOX News, Frederick K. Brewington, attorney of the New York man, said that the family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department following the death of their family member.

Brewington said, “It was absolutely appalling how the Suffolk County police physically abused and humiliated Mr. Lazo, then tried to cover it up. No family should have to go through what Mr. Lazo’s family had to.”

How the Police Officers Beat the New York Man?

According to a published article in Associated Press, the family’s lawyer said during an interview that police officers fabricated a story to pull over Lazo during a traffic stop. He asserted that they beat, humiliated, and stripped off his clothes.

It was found that he was taken to a nearby hospital instead of the precinct and the New York man had 36 injuries throughout his body. However, the lawyer representing the police officers said that there was no need at that time to bring Lazo to the hospital. Eventually, the New York man died in a holding cell in the hospital.
