In a devastating incident that unfolded in San Jose, California, a young expectant mother lost her life in a tragic hit-and-run car accident. Miraculously, doctors managed to save her unborn child in a life-saving emergency surgery.
The collision occurred at around 8:42 p.m. on a fateful Tuesday evening, in the vicinity of Blossom Hill Road and Winfield Boulevard in San Jose, according to a media advisory from the San Jose Police Department. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 21-year-old April Zoglauer, a resident of San Jose.
Zoglauer was driving eastbound in a 2008 black Nissan sedan when her vehicle collided with a 2013 white Hyundai sedan, which was traveling southbound. The white sedan was occupied by two unidentified males who fled the scene on foot immediately following the accident. The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) has disclosed that during the initial stages of the investigation, it was determined that the white sedan was, in fact, a stolen vehicle.
As of now, the SJPD has confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and there are no new updates available at this time.
Tragically, April Zoglauer succumbed to her life-threatening injuries after being transported to a local hospital. However, in a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy, medical professionals performed an emergency surgery to deliver her unborn child, who is now fighting for life in critical condition.
This heart-wrenching incident marks the 42nd fatal collision and the 43rd traffic-related death of 2023 in San Jose. It serves as a sobering reminder of the alarming rise in traffic fatalities across California. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, traffic fatalities in the state increased by approximately 7.6% from 3,980 in 2020 to 4,285 in 2021.
In response to the growing crisis of traffic-related deaths, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “We continue to face a national crisis of traffic deaths on our roadways, and everyone has a role to play in reversing the rise that we experienced in recent years. Through our National Roadway Safety Strategy, we’re strengthening traffic safety across the country, and working toward a day when these preventable tragedies are a thing of the past.”
