UFC star Israel Adesanya’s legal troubles stemming from a drunk driving incident in Auckland, New Zealand.
UFC Champion Israel Adesanya Faces Legal Turmoil After DUI Incident
In a recent turn of events, UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has found himself in legal trouble following a drunk driving incident in Auckland, New Zealand. According to a report by the NZ Herald, Adesanya was charged with driving a car with 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood on August 19, 2023, which significantly exceeds the legal limit in New Zealand set at 50 milligrams.
In response to the incident, Adesanya issued a statement expressing his regret and taking full responsibility for his actions. He said, “I want to apologize to the community, my family, and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at dinner. I was pulled over and gave an evidentiary blood test — the reading was 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. I am disappointed with my decision to drive; it was wrong. I know that people might follow me, and I want them to know I do not think this behavior is acceptable.”
The consequences of this charge could be severe. Adesanya is due for sentencing on January 10, 2024, and he could face a maximum penalty of three months in prison or a fine of $4,500. To mitigate these potential repercussions, his lawyer, Jim Trotter, has indicated that they will seek a discharge without conviction at the upcoming sentencing.

Israel Adesanya’s Legal Battle
According to the article of Sherdog, this legal incident comes on the heels of Adesanya’s recent loss in the UFC Octagon. He relinquished his middleweight belt to Sean Strickland in a surprising upset at UFC 293 in Sydney on September 9, 2023. Adesanya shared his thoughts on the loss in his first interview since the fight, stating that it “felt like a bad dream.”
As fans and the fighting community await the outcome of Adesanya’s legal proceedings, his future in both the UFC and his personal life remains uncertain. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible decision-making, especially when it comes to matters as serious as drinking and driving, for public figures and the general public alike.
