UFC Champion Israel Adesanya Faces Legal Turmoil After DUI Incident
In a recent turn of events, UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has found himself in legal trouble following a drunk driving incident in Auckland, New Zealand. According to a report by the NZ Herald, Adesanya was charged with driving a car with 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood on August 19, 2023, which significantly exceeds the legal limit in New Zealand set at 50 milligrams.
In response to the incident, Adesanya issued a statement expressing his regret and taking full responsibility for his actions. He said, “I want to apologize to the community, my family, and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at dinner. I was pulled over and gave an evidentiary blood test — the reading was 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. I am disappointed with my decision to drive; it was wrong. I know that people might follow me, and I want them to know I do not think this behavior is acceptable.”
The consequences of this charge could be severe. Adesanya is due for sentencing on January 10, 2024, and he could face a maximum penalty of three months in prison or a fine of $4,500. To mitigate these potential repercussions, his lawyer, Jim Trotter, has indicated that they will seek a discharge without conviction at the upcoming sentencing.
