The National Hurricane Center said Friday morning that Hurricane Lee reached a Category 5 hurricane Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean before weakening to a Category 4 hurricane.
In just 24 hours, Hurricane Lee quadrupled its wind speeds, peaking at 165 mph overnight before dipping slightly to 155 mph on Friday.
High surf and potentially fatal rip currents are anticipated to reach the northern Caribbean by Friday and last into the weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.
By Sunday evening, rip currents, rough surf, and hazardous conditions are expected along much of the US east coast.
According to the hurricane center’s anticipated track, Hurricane Lee will keep moving west-northwestward into the first part of next week.
According to Michael Brennan, the director of the National Hurricane Center, on Friday, Hurricane Lee is currently predicted to be somewhere northeast of the Turks and Caicos and eastern Bahamas on Tuesday.
