New Mexico is home to beautiful mountains, national forests. However, the state is also unfortunately ranked was the third highest crime rate in the US. Here is a list of some of the most dangerous cities in New Mexico for 2023.

 

According to Travel Safe-Abroad, while the reported crimes in New Mexico fell year over year, violent crimes have remained high (only second to Alaska). Below is a list of some of the most dangerous cities in New Mexico that you should be aware of.

 

  1. GALLUP. A moderately sized town has been ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in New Mexico for several years now. This is renowned for its native culture, embracing the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes that are indigenous here. Unfortunately, this small own is also known for being one of the state’s worst places to live. Gallup has reported violent crimes of 437 or 1,992 per 100,000. Residents here have 1 in 58 chance of falling victim of violent crime.

 

  1. BELEN. The second in this list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico. Criminal activity here is 190% higher than the national average. FBI data lists 2,029 violent crimes per 100,00 and 5,243 property crimes. Belen is part of the historic Rio Grande Valley, but this is not safe for solo travelers.

 

  1. DEMING. The third in this list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico. Residents here hoped that this would be a thriving metropolis, reason why it was nicknamed as the new Chicago. However, the population may have remained small, criminal activity rivals its namesake. Violent crime reports 963 per 100,00. There are over 5,153 property crimes.

It’s hard to not want to visit New Mexico, however, it is always advised to understand the risks and always take precautions during your visits. Crime can occur any time.

 

  1. LOS LUNAS. The fourth in this list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico. This is considered as one of the wealthiest villages in New Mexico. However, this city is rapidly growing, and rapid growth is a factor for rising crime rates. Property crimes have reached 4,047 per 100,000. While violent crimes are at 1,286 per 100,000.

 

  1. ROSWELL. The fifth in this list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico is a popular tourist attraction. Sadly, the crime statistics here are both trending upwards, getting worse year by year. Reported property crimes are at 3,772 per 100,000, while violent crimes are at 849 per 100,000.

 

  1. CLOVIS. The sixth in this list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico. Clovis has been named an excellent place for solo travelers. But, this also ranked in the state for rapes and murders. Violent crime are at 673 per 100,000, and property crimes at 3,805 per 100,000 people.

 

  1. ARTESIA. The last in the list of most dangerous cities in New Mexico. Artesia is one of the most dangerous places for theft but is one of the best places to live in the state, too. This town has high violent and property crime. Resident have 1 in 430 chance of encountering violent crime. Property crime occurs in 1 in 55.
